Canmeds competencies

The portfolio can include Canmeds competencies, which are used to map the broad professional development of the learner. If this feature is enabled, these competencies can be assessed within various forms, such as a mini-CEX or short clinical assessment.

Competency diagram

On the Competency diagram page, the learner's performance is displayed visually. You will find a radar chart showing the average scores for the various Canmeds competencies, making strengths and areas for improvement visible at a glance.

Competency matrix

The Competency matrix displays a table where Canmeds competencies are cross-referenced with other skills in the portfolio, such as EPAs. The top row of the table shows the total number of assessments and the overall average score per competency. The subsequent rows show the average score per competency for a specific skill. This tool helps you analyze whether the learner scores consistently across different clinical situations.

Competency detail view

By navigating to the detail page of a specific competency, you can view the personal learning goals linked to that competency. You will also find an overview of all learning activities where this competency was assessed. Using the speech bubble icon, you can display all narrative feedback, such as strengths and areas for improvement, directly within the table.

Additional information

Assessments without numerical scores

In some training programs, no numerical scores are assigned to Canmeds competencies, and only narrative feedback is used. In these cases, the overviews will show total counts of assessments instead of average scores to indicate progress.
